Ukraine is a sovereign state. It occupies a vast territory. Ukraine stretches for almost 900 kilometres from North to South, and for over 1,300 km from East to West.

There are many towns, coal mines, iron-and-steel plants in Ukraine. Forest takes up only 15 per cent of Ukraine’s territory. In the South Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Ukraine is rich in minerals, including iron, lead, coal, oil, natural gas, salts, marble and building materials. Ukraine has a modern industry and highly developed agriculture. The leading industries are power engineering, machine building and chemical production.

Ukraine was one of the founding members of the United Nations Organization. It is a member of many international bodies and a party to international treaties and agreements.
